Salma Hayek Criticized For Pro Mexico Campaign
Salma Hayek stars in a new promo titled Iniciativa Mexico which is all about bettering the country.
It’s a nice message about improving and loving Mexico and citizen responsibility in ensuring that Mexico continues to thrive, but the truth is that she is being criticized for it hard.
Many people argue that she doesn’t live in Mexico and hasn’t in years since she packed her bags for her career goals.
Mexicans left and right are laughing at Salma’s participation in this asking what she has done lately for their country.
We see their point, but you don’t necessarily have to live somewhere to love it, do you?

“ensuring that Mexico continues to thrive”…..continues to thrive??? You call what’s going on in Mexico thriving?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA
The countrys been tearing itself apart for years. People are leaving in droves to come here for work. That whole damn country needs to be demolished and rebuilt from scratch. Nuke it all!!! But send the hot chicks here first.

Selma Hayek is a talented beautiful movie star. Unfortunately, it seems that her credibility to address this topic isn’t on the mark. Seems to me, someone who lives in Mexico, is high profile business person would be a better choice.

Haaaa, Michael you need to lay off CNN and Fox News just a tad bit. Mexico is thriving despite the “Narco war.” Just read a book or GO to Mexico and then speak, otherwise you sound like a fool.
And I’m not intrigued about Salma, I just want to know HOW Iniciativa Mexico paid her to do this. It’s suppose to be a non-gov organization, how are they getting these funds?!

Whether or not she live there are not, Salma is doing what she can to thrive for her country. SHE’S MEXICAN. And she is proud and mexicans she be to of her.
Unlike my country Barbados, we have a self conceited, stuck-up Bitche who doesn’t give a rat’s ass about us, and we Bajans are Kissing her ass for it.
Anyways, Keep up the good work Salma.

The whole point (and why she was paid) was to bring notice to the cause/campaign.
It worked. I know what’s going on in Mexico, but I don’t know about specific groups and organizations trying to “fix” Mexico. With Salma being involved, I am not aware.
I like to know WHO do the people of Mexico (or those complaining about Salma) want to represent and do these promos?
Stop complaining and come up with a solution.

I watch a lot of celebrity interviews for work & it’s been my observation that Salma’s heritage comes up in about 90% of her appearances. I’d even argue that she’s the most high profile & proudly MEXICAN actors in Hollywood right now. What she does for work in this country shouldn’t come up in this case where she’s helping out her country of origin. Go get on Wyclef’s case instead – he want’s to run the joint!

Like you said. You don’t have to be leaving in Mexico to know that My country needs fixing. I haven’t been in Mexico in over 15 year and I don’t plan to, because It scares me. Now everyone can Criticize Salma, but truth is that I haven’t see any, and I mean any other Mexican leaving in the Country doing anything to help. So please stop the hate and appreciate and let all do something about it.
This hate that everyone has its just nuts. She’s talented and I can say that she didn’t get pay a cent for this promo so why Criticize??
Just saying.

Salma is Mexico’s equivalent to Julia Roberts or Angelina Jolie.
Also she’s also half-Lebanese.

I believe Mrs. Hayek-Pinault is very sincere and concerned about her home country. She has established The Salma Hayek Foundation to help kids in Mexico. She has always tried to employee Mexicans in projects she has done (Frida). She has been involved with Domestic Violence and to my knowledge has helped to create places for the victims. These are just the things I know about.
All of us pursue career goals and economic opportunities and where those lead us even it means leaving our home. I left my hometown over 30 years ago because as a kid it was an economically active and vibrant factory town that today is a very depressed community. I left to pursue my career goals and for a better opportunity. That doesn’t mean I still don’t feel a strong connection to my hometown or that I’m not conerned about the welfare of the people who remained and it’s future. A place of great memories and lifelong friends.
I would ask those who criticize, what have you done to change things or make the world better?
The sooner we realize we are all one people, no matter our heritage, race, ethnic group, gender, religion and what you do to the least of us you do to all of us, the better life will be.
Keep doing what you do Salma!!!

Actually, I find it much easier to love a place I don’t live in anymore. Nostalgia does wonders.

I live in Mexico and I saw the TVspot the other day… And I sincerily tell you I was like WTF???… I really think that Salma has nothing to do with Mexico anymore… It doesnt matter if she loves Mexico or not… Its about living in Mexico and struggling with the violence and culture we deal with everyday… Salma hasnt lived in Mexico in years… YEARS… So, to me, she doesnt have anything to do with Mexico… She is totally out of context in that TVspot… I just dont believe her, not inspiring at all…

We in the US don’t criticize when Bono comes over and meets with the Pres, or when Shakira performs at the Inauguration or when Celine Dion went on CNN and sang God Bless America before she became a citizen. Get over it Mexico

Wow! Thank you, Will. Never thought I’d read such an intelligent comment in this forum. Bravo!

ok, maybe Salma does not live in Mexico, but what does that have to do with wanting to help? If people were more involved with helping instead of spreading negativity then the world would be a better place. It’s like damn if you do, damn if you don’t!
August 25th, 2010
Perhaps your’e right but if Salma were to move bk. to Mexico with her daughter someone would try to kidnapp her or her child or both. She’s better off in the U.S. What’s she going to do in Mexico now? Novelas. She’s beyond that. Actually sometimes people who leave their country and live somewhere else love their birth country more than when they actually live there.

I don’t believe that you ahve to live in a country to love it and wish it well. I would give anything to be able to leave the U.S. and live in Mexico. my love for the country is caused by my love for her people who have befriended me and shared their love and their lives with me here in the U.S. Certainly many of the people have been forced here by the economic hardships of life in their country; many, if not most, of which have been caused by the U.S. in its efforts to reduce all of this hemisphere to client states serving the needs of the master. It is racism that I hate and Mexico and its people that I love.

Parts from her spiel sounded a lot like those words spoken by JFK about ” do not ask what your country can do for you….”. It’s nice that she wants to help, but she sounds phony, and so out of touch with reality. Yeah Salma, whatever you say.
