Roselyn Sanchez Talks About Her Accent Debacle
We told you Roselyn Sanchez won’t be participating in ABC’s pilot Cutthroat because of her accent and the actress has expressed her feelings about the whole thing.
She sent a message to her fans saying:
“My worst nightmare just happened. Got let go of the pilot Cut Throat for ABC because of my ACCENT. I have spoken about the struggle I have faced because of having an accent, but after 15 years working consistently on hugely successful movies and doing almost five years on a very successful TV show, to be discriminated this way feels awful. I pride myself on being Latina, growing up in Puerto Rico and moving to America to follow a dream, regardless of the way I speak. I’m sad and disgusted. Thank God my faith doesn’t waiver and I know for a fact that when one door closes it’s because a huge garage is about to open for you. Onward and upward.”
Onward and upward is right!

It does sucks, she should take speech classes, English is not an easy language and accents can be really bad and it doesn’t matter the job, Americans like to hear a clear sound. Being a proud Latina is great but if she wants to work in the American world, she should prepare herself more, they don’t care about ethnicity but money and results.

This is one of the reasons why I left the business–it is the only industry where they can practice legal discrimination against whomever they wish without repercussions. Unfortunately, it rarely comes down to talent, but whether you fit their “standards” of what you should look/act/talk/be like. You are too good for them, Rosalyn. A better opportunity will come along for you. *&%@ ABC.

Accent? She has an accent? Funny thing I never noticed it and I doubt many other have either, She is an actress for God’s sake. All she needs is a dialog coach if her ACCENT was so offensive. Accent or not the dismissal is offensive.

Sorry but I don’t disagree with the decision. If her accent made it difficult to understand her then they are within their rights to fire her. As I recall half of the Argentine actors have to get rid of their accents to work in Mexican novelas. I am also a proud Latina, but that is the deal in any buisness that serves the general public. I am sure BRAVO is second guessing their decision to hire Mathew Maconahey’s girlfriend. She sounds like she has marbles in her mouth and is making “Shear Genius” impossible to sit through.

Well, they just did not want her and used the accent as an excuse, cause come on Modern Family, Sofia (no offense to Sofia) has character has a very strong accent – they should get a better excuse. And as a Latina, I am okay with the accent because it not only Latinos who have accent and it represent who we are and where we came from.

I call bullshit! If the role asked for a latina without an accent ? why did she go in?
Most british and canadian actors lose their accent to get work EVERYDAY!
It’s called a dialect coach, look it up Rosalyn.
How is she being discriminated?
She currently works in t.v. and is very well known.
She just didn’t get the role and that’s that!
Sometimes we just aren’t right for the part.

If that’s not a classy way to handle such an unfortunate situation, I don’t know what is. Classy, graceful, beautiful and strong, something all Latinas should aspire to be. Roselyn is a great example.

The problem of accent may not have been with “Received Standard American English” rather Yiddish. Where are you, after all?

Hmmm, some thoughts here–there are lots of Aussies working in American TV, and they’ve had to lose their accents for their roles–like Hugh Laurie in House. Accents can be a plus or a liability. I remember when lots of American companies put their telemarketing ctrs out in the midwest US b/c ppl there have bland, flat accents that were deemed least offensive to the ear! Now that’s all out the window since now it’s often we reach someone in India for customer service or God knows where. So I think their may be something more here than meets the eye (or ear!) since Sophia of Modern Family does have a very thick accent and seems to be doing just fine!

She was replaced with ANOTHER LATINA, PEOPLE! Discrimination? What? Mia Maestro has the part now and also has an accent, she’s Argentinian, but it’s not as strong. I think Roselyn needs to represent this accurately.

If you look up the show it had cast her originally & they knew she had an accent then so i think it’s wrong to fire her over it later. & people shouldnt have to lose their accents to be actors they should be proud of them. If she’s sup to be for a latina her accent shoukd have been fine for the show. I’m a fan of Roselyn & love her accent. I’ve never had problems understanding her.
