He shaved his hair (now it’s a bit longer) -with some hair on the crown- because he’s on sabbatical and, like he usually does, he’s going to India to meditate. As part of the Buddist belief, shaving the hair (and even women do) is symbolic of getting detached of material things and concentrating on the being inside.
