Backstage Pass : Premios Juventud 2006

by Latin Gossip Staff on 07.13.2006 - Award Shows, Chisme, Televisión, Thalia

Thalia Premios JuventudThis year’s Premios Juventud (Youth Awards) was not nearly as electric as the previous years, but either way provided material for us to rant, rave, and relish on. My seat wasn’t that great, but I did have access to many celebrities.

  • Kumbia Kings opened with a hot performance and they really pumped up the crowd. I looked around and everybody was dancing.
  • Univision, hoping to bank on their recent flux of English-speaking audience, had host Cristian De La Fuente announce that the show was available in CC3, making english subtitles available.
  • La India fell off the stage during her performance straight into the audience not once, not twice, but three times.
  • Calle 13 performed and the entrance consisted of the rapper flying in on a bicycle E.T. style.
  • Thalia looked stunning and pulled off Mariah Carey hair better than Mariah Carey, but lip synced the entire song and then proceeded to pretend even more by faking a guitar performance.
  • Wisin and Yandel walking up to RBD in the seating area and congratulating them on their wins. The RBD kids looked frightened for their lives when the reggaetoneros approached them.
  • Rapper Ivy Queen was recognized for her long-running and successful career.
  • Daddy Yankee wasn’t there to receive his award for Best Urban Artist and the crowd booed when it was announced that he wasn’t present.
  • Bobby Larios asked to be seated next to India or Ivy Queen only.
  • Aventura won the award for Favorite Tropical Artist and then one of their members accepted the award with a rap dedicated to the immigrants in the United States. Very Anti-Bush.
  • Ninel Conde, the star of the night, was sexy as hell during her musical performance.
  • Bacilos had what they called their “farewell performance”. They have split up and I’m sure we won’t hear of them again.
  • There were winners and there were losers. Check out the winners.

All in all, it was an entertaining night and I am sure more will happen at the after-parties. That is all for now, I am off to get more scoop. I will report tomorrow after my hangover wears off.

Cynthia Klitbo is Starting off on the Wrong Foot

by Latin Gossip Staff on 07.13.2006 - Celebrity Blunder, Chisme

Cynthia KlitboMexican actress Cynthia Klitbo has confessed that she is smoking cigarettes during her pregnancy. The actress, who will have the baby via cesarean, admits that she smokes three cigarettes a day but doesn’t finish them. As if to say that not finishing the cigarette prevents damage to the baby.
This is so sad, it doesn’t deserve a funny comment attached to the post.

Salma Hayek’s Mother to Release CD

by Latin Gossip Staff on 07.13.2006 - Chisme, Musica

Salma HayekDiana Hayek, Salma’s mother, recently moved to Los Angeles to not only be with her daughter but to also work on releasing an album. Diana sings classic opera and now wants to share it with the world.

” I am so proud of her decision, and I support her 100% in this project,” said Salma Hayek, of her mother’s interest in music.

Who says she can’t be talented as well? There are great examples of family members being just as talented, if not more, that their celeb counterparts. Like…er…Haylie Duff and Solange Knowles. OK, bad examples, but I think Diana can pull it off.

Thalia Didn’t Really Get a Diamond

by Latin Gossip Staff on 07.13.2006 - Musica, Thalia

ThaliaEMI Latin, the record label Thalia belongs to, held a press conference at the Mandarin Hotel in Miami to celebrate her eight nominations for Premios Juventud and for selling more than 10 million copies in her musical career.

This is most definitely a milestone, but they announced that she was receiving a Diamond certification. I verified with the Recording Industry Association of America and their site says on March 16, 1999, the RIAA® launched the Diamond® Awards, honoring sales of 10 million copies or more of an album or single. Because Thalia sold 10 million copies total of all her albums combined, is it still considered Diamond?

I don’t want to rain on Thalia’s parade, but I also don’t want to be misled at her parade. Those parades can be dangerous.

UPDATE: I checked with the RIAA and they let me know that a Diamond certification was not issued to Thalia. They also provided me with a link to a searchable database that shows no such certification given to Thalia. This is most likely just a recognition award given to Thalia by her label. Nonetheless, she has sold 10 million copies in her career and that is a big accomplishment in itself. Diamond or not.

by Latin Gossip Staff on 07.12.2006 - Chisme

JD NatashaLatin Spotlight is an opportunity to focus on one Latin public figure. The last two weeks have consisted of two well-known celebrities, Eva Mendes and Wilmer Valderrama. Latin Spotlight also serves another purpose of promoting talent that may not be as recognizable.

JD NatashaThis week I am putting the spotlight on JD Natasha, who hails from Miami. She is an 18 year-old singer-songwriter who performs in both English and Spanish. Her father is from Argentina and her mother is Cuban American. JD Natasha has released her music in both English and Spanish essentially building a fanbase in both markets simultaneously.
JD NatashaShe released an album titled “Imperfect-Imperfecta” and Emilio Estefan mentioned that it was one of his favorite albums of the year. Because of her young age, she caused some commotion when she appeared on the cover of Maxim en Español.
JD NatashaShe has performed and presented in various award shows including MTV Latin VMAs, Premio Lo Nuestro, and The Latin Billboard Awards. She is usually pardoned for her outlandish fashion fashion fauz pas because of her rock roots and the fact that she is young.
