Juanes’s new single “Yerbatero” is awesome and he played it live at the World Cup opening perfectly. It’s up on itunes now, they released it right after his performance I think. I got it and its sooo good.

Ben, definitely an improvement on the prior translation. But there are still 2 points being translated incorrectly: The man is not leaving his wife as has been incorrectly translated. The lyrics address the possibility of his woman or wife leaving HIM. Nor is he being instructed to rub ointment on her soul, he’s being instructed to rub ointment on his OWN (because he’s the one potentially being hurt here).
If you read the Spanish perhaps more slowly, and dissect it more carefully:
“si a usted señor, lo deja su mujer, úntese en el alma pomadita de clavel” means “if you sir, are left by your woman (wife), rub carnation ointment on your soul”.
If he were leaving his wife, it would have said “si usted señor deja a su mujer, ” with no “a” before usted, and no “lo” before deja, then yes, he would be leaving her, but this is not the case.
The word úntese is reflexive, so it’s impossible that it would be telling him to rub the ointment on her soul, it’s undoubtedly on his own. If he were told to rub it on her, it would have been úntale in tú, úntele in usted, or untale in vos (vos being the conjugation most used in Medellín where Juanes is from). I’ve taught English in Medellin and Spanish in California for many years.
There are also many awful translations on the internet of yerbatero, such things as “quack” or “witch doctor”. This can’t be further from the truth. Yerbatero is very much like a curandero, someone who uses herbal medicine to heal, a healer, or an herbalist. Don’t forget, such drugs as aspirin and valium come from plants. All science originates with plants.

Makes me want to move…figuratively, in my body and soul, and also literally. I have been to Colombia in the
past, and miss it, and its vitality.
Juanes (and Shakira) have been happydiscoveries. In the EE.UU. I also enjoy much music that isn’t chart-buster type of music, but that is strong. Any suggestions about other artists of Colombia or elsewhere in Latin America would be appreciated.
Also, out of curiosity, what does it cost to attend a concert by Juanes, Shakira, etc. in Colombia?
