Jessica Not Proud To Be Latina
Jessica Alba has really done it this time. She continues to make remarks about how she is American, and doesn’t consider herself anything else…meaning she isn’t Latina.
We are sick and tired of it as are other gossip bloggers.
This latest tirade brings us this comment from Jessica:
“Alba is my last name and I’m proud of that. But that’s it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I’m American. Throughout my whole life, I’ve never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I’m less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don’t call her Latina because she’s blonde.”
Of course, this really pisses us off…but we’re not sure what to do here.
We are very proud to be first generation Americans, but continue to keep our pride for our Latin heritage and roots strong - is she having a hard time expressing this?
We’ll leave this up to you guys - should we continue highlighting Jessica Alba here on LatinGossip.com?
After a few days, we will check your responses and decide if we are banning her from this site or not.

The color of her skin should not define her. Sure, what she said was stupid but take a good look at your comments. Most of them sound ignorant as well.
Not everyone identifies as Latino or Hispanic and that’s reality. People shouldn’t be forced to identify as Hispanic if they don’t want to. After all, Hispanic is an American concept not a Latino one or whatever you want to call it. When her grandpa came to this country he wasn’t labeled as Hispanic. Many Mexicans were labeled white because for the most part that’s what they were back in the day. I don’t know what her grandpa is mixed with but this girl clearly has hard time being bi-racial just like Halle Berry and others. Again, her apperance should not define here. Too many of us have fought for a color blind world for you guys to set us back.

There have been many Latin stars that have made it big in America without denouncing their heritage, changing their name, etc…Stars who were asked by companies to change this or that so they could appear more American, and said no take me as I am or don’t take me at all. And they have gone on to have succes, win awards, obtain the respects of other stars, etc…
Look at Benicio Del Toro, Rita Moreno, Edward James Olmos, Gloria & Emilio Estefan, Andy Garcia, George Lopez, Ruben Blades, Raul Julia (RIP), and many others. All of these people made it big and they all proudly expressed their heritage.
If the talentless crab doesn’t consider herself Latin fine - that’s her choice. But then don’t agree to be on the cover of Latin Magazines when you need pub;icity. Hopefully the Latin media will get smart and never include her in any Latin mag, tv show, or special event ever again.
I was born in America and have betetred myself and become successful without EVER having to deny any part of my Latin heritage.

I had another case where I had some Latino customers, and as I was researching they studied my business card and had a discussion, in Spanish, right in front of me. The wife said to her husband (in reference to me and the name on my card) “That is not him. He has pale skin and blue eyes.” Another time, I, as the office manager, was criticized by a Latino client because no one in my office was bilingual. He shut up when I told him that Japanese, Mandarin, Thai, Swedish and French were all spoken in my office. My father who is a teacher has also encoutered hostility from parents of his students who have said that “His last name is Rodriguez. He should be able to speak Spanish.” I could go on and on about similar situatons like that. But suffice it to say that it’s bullshit like that that has lot of us angry and worried. The fact that a group is going to come into MY country and try to dictate that I speak a language other than my native English, or that there are more and more signs in Spanish and a Mexican Flag on every other car has got me angry. Make no mistakes, I feel the same way when I see whole neighborhoods being taken over by Chinese and block after block has nothing but Kanji on the signs. But I am at least spoken to in English when I’m in such neighborhoods. It comes down to the fact that I feel my way of life being threatened by such things. I have been to Mexico a few times and I would NEVER presume to insist that people there speak to me in English. I wil speak to them as best I can in my limited Spanish. Same goes for when I travel. I’ve studied Japanese and Arabic-even if just a few phrases to show locals that I respect their language and culture. I’m going to spend a few months living in Germany. I’m going to study the language in depth so that I can communicate with them, not expect everyone in Germany to speak English to me. The French have had a bad reputation as people who can largely speak English but insist, while in their country, that French be spoken. They’ve been called arrogant assholes for that. But this issue has made me re-evalute and I now say “God Bless the French” Anyway, sorry to ramble on, but I was feeling particularly passionate about this issue this morning. I really believe that anyone who wants to come to America, work hard, embrace what this country has to offer and assimilate enough to speak English and be able to interact should be given the opportunity to do so. That doesn’t mean abandon or deny your heritage, or to refrain from speakng your native language and observing your cultural customs. Just remember that when you emmigrate, it should not be up to the country to which your moving to assimilate to you.

I’m Puerto Rican and English is my first language. My parents didn’t want me to learn Spanish for fear of the “White American” not wanting me to succeed/progress in school. I had to learn Spanish on my own and sometimes i wish they had spoken to me or taught me Spanish just so I can relate to my family that doesn’t speak English. But I was still raised around the music, food, culture.
