Jessica Not Proud To Be Latina
Jessica Alba has really done it this time. She continues to make remarks about how she is American, and doesn’t consider herself anything else…meaning she isn’t Latina.
We are sick and tired of it as are other gossip bloggers.
This latest tirade brings us this comment from Jessica:
“Alba is my last name and I’m proud of that. But that’s it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I’m American. Throughout my whole life, I’ve never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I’m less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don’t call her Latina because she’s blonde.”
Of course, this really pisses us off…but we’re not sure what to do here.
We are very proud to be first generation Americans, but continue to keep our pride for our Latin heritage and roots strong – is she having a hard time expressing this?
We’ll leave this up to you guys – should we continue highlighting Jessica Alba here on LatinGossip.com?
After a few days, we will check your responses and decide if we are banning her from this site or not.

I don’t get her. Wasn’t it just a couple weeks ago she was a presenter on the ALMA awards? Her attitude is the fault of her parents and grandparents. It was up to them to teach her to be proud of her Latin heritage.
Me and my friends were all born in the US, but our families taught us to be proud of our Latin heritage. I flaunt my Latin heritage in everybody’s face. LOL And our family is very diverse because alot of members have married italians, blacks, mexicans, jewish – even a hawaiin lol – and they have all taught there kids to be proud of their diversity.

Many Mexicans were labeled white because for the most part that’s what they were back in the day. I believe that your interpretation of her comment is out of context. She’s making a statement that we continue to have a culture of ‘otherness’ in the United States based on being darker, having an accent and other racist issues. The fact that she kept the name Alba demonstrates that she is proud of her heritage. And at the same time she’s pointing out how someone like Cameron Diaz and others don’t get the same seperation based on them fitting in to the dominant culture look. She’s stating that despite the fact that she’s a fourth generation Alba, obviously of Latino parentage, there’s pressure to identify as something different than someone who’s an American. I vote for keeping her on.

Honestly, she is American. She was born and raised here. If she doesn’t consider herself Latina, then maybe she shouldn’t be covered here. But then you’ll have to stop covering women like Aguilera and Cameron Diaz. They don’t look latina and hardly do anything for Latinos. Also, you pick on Jessica and ignore other actors who say negative things about Latinos. For example, the Cuban-American actor Raul Espinoza complains that he doesn’t want to be compared to a Mexicans and other non-white Hispanics. He says he’s proud of looking white. Why hasn’t Latin gossip covered for his story. At least Jessica is just saying that she’s American, while Raul is putting down non-white Hispanics. If you’re going to ban Jessica, then maybe you should be fair and expose other Hispanics who put down their own people.

Jessica was pleasant as a presenter @ the ALMAs last year; she even chimed in about her latina heritage. Now, for some reason, she’s down on it. She sounds like she’s rebelling, as if someone (management?) is pushing too hard.
Some people avoid politics and controversy (border issues?). She does sound ambitious; fine. Maybe her focus will broaden as she grows and matures.
There have been some rumors about a past eating disorder; again: only rumors (not fact ). IF that were the case, could factors such as appetite, weight, and body image have any relationship to her attitude about culture?
Jessica is saying she doesn’t really identify with being latina. so I don’t think she’ll care either way . If space is at a premium, why not use it for someone else who will value inclusion because of identifying with both Latina and American.

I have cousins, they born in USA and are proud to be Americans, they talk like Jessica Alba does, but they look like Mexicans, their skin is brown, their eyes are black and their hair is black, they always are talking horrors from Mexico, but when they come to visit us they act like they were tied for years and run like horses and feel free, they speak spanish, that opened doors in their jobs in Chicago; the same as Jessica Alba, when she was called by James Cameron for Dark Angel, why she didn’t reject the character of Max Guevara, a character obviusly with latin roots. i’m not making excuses for her, but rather a (possible) explanation. from what i’ve read elsewhere, her grandfather distanced himself from his Mexican heritage, then turned around and raised his children away from their heritage, which would make them fully engrained in “American” culture by that point. so now, his children raise their children (including Jessica obviously) the same way. We all have choices, but if you are brought up a certain way, then that heavily influences your perception of yourself.
Put it this way: If YOU were only 1/4th Asian and 3/4 Latino AND were raised Latino (with no influence of Asian culture), would you consider yourself Asian? Didn’t think so. Would Asians consider you/accept you as Asian? Didn’t think so.

I think Jessica’s comments are just based on HER life. If her parents and grandparents are from California and nobody educated her about her latin background, how is she supposed to feel like a latina? Don’t be hard on her. You have to be realistic and understanding about how she and others are brought up. I am an American of Mexican descent. My parents are Mexican and we spoke exclusively in English at home so that way they could learn English better. I also did not feel a connection with the latin community, However I do have a strong connection to my family in Sonora, Mexico where I learned spanish and speak it very well. I now live in Sonora, Mexico where I have a strong connection with the Mexican community and my Mexican relatives who I love and respect. I never had a connection with the latin community in the U.S. but that in no way means that I don’t respect my heritage because I obviousely do and my actions show it. BE REALISTIC AND UNDERSTANDING.

I am confused by Alba’s ethnicity. Recently, she stated in an article that her mother if French. Then mentioned growing up bi=racial. What is her ethnicity? And she is a hypocrite. I am definitely in the minority here, but I completely understand where she is coming from and I agree with what she said. I have a Latin last name, but I come from a diverse family background. I am immensely proud of my grandfather, who came to America from Mexico. He was dirt poor when he came here and he worked hard all of his life. He never forgot where he came from, nor was he ashamed of it. But he was a staunch believer in America and it was in those beliefs that he raised his family. No one in my family is ashamed of our Latin heritage, but we call ourselves American because we ARE American first and foremost. Although our heritage is irreversibly part of who we are, it does not DEFINE who we are. So with that in mind, I can’t call myself a Latino, anymore than I can call myself British, German, Spanish or Icelander. I am an American of Latin, British, German, Spanish and Icelandic descent.

You all do realize that Latin is not a race and the fact that she has a Spanish last name does not mean she is not white. So what if she has assimilated. I live in Brazil, it is part of Latin America, here there are people of every race and every mixture, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, German, Polish, Black, Asian, Native American and every mixture of these. Wow nesnej, VERY bold-I applaud you and agree. As I said in my original response (#49) I am essentially a caucasian who has a Spanish last name. I was not raised in a Spanish speaking household and even my grandparents who were native Spanish speakers, spoke to me only in English. I think what angers or frightens many people in America is the perception that many Latino immigrants are coming to this country, living to some degree or another off of our social services, and not paying taxes(on wages). And to top if off, a lot of them won’t even make the effort to learn our language or assimilate into our culture. I think most Americans will agree that these immigrants truly do work 10 times harder than anyone else in this country, doing jobs that no one else will do for a fraction of the pay that other Americans earn. But I work in customer service and sales and I have encountered downright hostility from Latino clients when they learn that I cannot speak Spanish (fluently enough to conduct business), especially because of my last name. People will look at my card twice, after giving me a dubious look and say “You don’t look like a Rodriguez”. Honestly, what kind of a stupid question is that? I asked one lady back: “Well, what does a Rodriguez look like?” She herself admitted that that was stupid question. I had another case where I had some Latino customers, and as I was researching they studied my business card and had a discussion, in Spanish, right in front of me. The wife said to her husband (in reference to me and the name on my card) “That is not him. Make no mistakes, I feel the same way when I see whole neighborhoods being taken over by Chinese and block after block has nothing but Kanji on the signs. But I am at least spoken to in English when I’m in such neighborhoods. It comes down to the fact that I feel my way of life being threatened by such things. I have been to Mexico a few times and I would NEVER presume to insist that people there speak to me in English. I wil speak to them as best I can in my limited Spanish. Same goes for when I travel. I’ve studied Japanese and Arabic-even if just a few phrases to show locals that I respect their language and culture. I’m going to spend a few months living in Germany. I’m going to study the language in depth so that I can communicate with them, not expect everyone in Germany to speak English to me. The French have had a bad reputation as people who can largely speak English but insist, while in their country, that French be spoken. They’ve been called arrogant assholes for that. But this issue has made me re-evalute and I now say “God Bless the French” Anyway, sorry to ramble on, but I was feeling particularly passionate about this issue this morning. I really believe that anyone who wants to come to America, work hard, embrace what this country has to offer and assimilate enough to speak English and be able to interact should be given the opportunity to do so. That doesn’t mean abandon or deny your heritage, or to refrain from speakng your native language and observing your cultural customs. Just remember that when you emmigrate, it should not be up to the country to which your moving to assimilate to you.

okay…for those who have posted all these political posts and stuff… has anyone ever really thought about the WHY our parents did what they did?
I’m Puerto Rican and English is my first language. My parents didn’t want me to learn Spanish for fear of the “White American” not wanting me to succeed/progress in school. I had to learn Spanish on my own and sometimes i wish they had spoken to me or taught me Spanish just so I can relate to my family that doesn’t speak English. But I was still raised around the music, food, culture.

That’s the problem with most of these Chicanas that are in Hollywood or in the public eye; they all deny there Mexican culture! It’s sad what most Chicanas have become now-in-days. Hollywood needs more Mexican men, so they can represent Mexicans/ Latinos in true essence. If you look at Chicanas now-in-days they dye their hair blond or try to act black. Youre right. The spanish language is a lovely language. It’s just incomprehensable that people have to hate, or at least show hate to, someone who says she felt no connection to their latin heritage or race. So what. She feels that she is American. Whoopi Goldberg once made a comment that she is American, not African-American. The African community didn’t go crazy and diss her for those comments because it was true. She never denied being of latina heritage…she just didn’t want to be recognized as different from any other natural born american citizen. Which, in my opinion, should be the thing to say nowadays.
In calling for recognition toward ones surname, skin color, etc…we ask people to judge us solely on that. And thusly, we risk being judged wrongfully by the negative stereotypes associated with any body who “exploits” their own genetic/cultural history.

She doesn’t consider herself Latina because she never grew up with that mentality. I think it’s her grandfather’s fault for changing his Mexican roots towards American culture. He never wanted his kids to know Spanish because of segregation and the hate towards minority during those times. He even married a white woman from Europe.
