Spanish Team Poses With Slanted Eyes
We’re not sure why they would do this, but the Spanish basketball team that is playing in the Olympics posed for a promo shot with each team member slanting their eyes, presumably to ‘appear’ Asian.
Many around the world are upset at this, calling it racist and unnecessary.
There was a moment of tension when the Spanish and Chinese basketball teams went head to head, but the game went on as normal…Spain won 85-75.

Ignorance is a big issue here in Buenos Aires too. Now that I know how the education system works here, it all makes sense. People are not well educated. Chinese people are seen everywhere in Buenos Aires and Portenos are not very fond of them.

Chinese people having slanted eyes is such a huge generalization. I’m officially disgusted.

I think that it’s a very racist gesture and very disrespectful! All I know is that if people were making fun of my latin roots, I would be offended. What the hell were they thinking while taking that picture? Dumb asses.

Offensive as hell…..why would they even THINK this is cute? Remember the flack the Peruvian under-21s caught when they did this to Korean fans?
But it shouldn’t even be about the flack they getp; it’s just insensitive, arrogant & rude. (& I usually root for Spain, having lived there for a year as a kid).
Mr. Calderon’s gonna face HELL when he returns to the Toronto Raptors; big asian population here, & they’re not gonna buy his “loving gesture”.
I’m really disgusted & saddened by this.

Time-slip, if you will, back to the 1950-1960’s. The boss (of course, male) walks into the office, and pats his female secretary’s rear end. He says, ” I like them round and plump.” Now, someone from the 21st century tells this boss that he has done and said an awful thing, and he is being downright sexist.
His response: “I was giving my secretary a friendly greeting. It was just harmless fun. It is absurd for anyone to make a big thing of it. How could women possibly take offense at this? I’ll have you know that I am friends with many women!”
Dear stupid Spaniards, don’ t you think it’s about time you learned that it is offensive when the people you direct your words and actions think it’s offensive. The one dishing it out has no say in whether people should be offended or not.
Join us. We have already moved into the 21st century. Hope you can catch up.

Spaniards are used to thinking they are better than everyone else and are too ignorant to understand that by taking pictures of themselves immatating the asian people is actually an insult. Show some respect to these people the asian people have already suffered enough by their own people.

Some of the comments seem to be proving that racism knows no national boundaries! Criticize individual actions, fine, but to then to expand that to describing (and insulting) a whole country….hello hypocrisy!
