Cuban Athlete Kicks Ref in The Head… On Purpose
Que pena!
Cubano Taekwondo athlete Angel Matos was anything but angel-like in Beijing.
In the sport, if an athlete doesn’t get up from the mat in less than a minute, they are automatically disqualified.
Angel was awaiting medical attention, and after a minute of sitting on the floor, the ref disqualified him. Rightly so.
Angel got up enraged and accused the ref of being ‘bought out’…then pushed him and followed it up with a sweet, but unjust, kick to the head.
The WTF immediately responded with:
“This is a strong violation of the spirit of taekwondo and the Olympic Games. The sanctions are the following and are effective immediately: Lifetime ban of the coach and athlete in all championships sanctioned by the (World Taekwondo Federation) and at the same time, all records of this athlete at the Beijing Games will immediately be erased.”
Angel should have kept his cool. BIG mistake!
