Fernando Botero Draws Inspiration from Iraq
Colombian Artist Fernando Botero, known for his ‘fat people’ drawings and sculptures, has created some of the world’s finest contemporary art, and today he is presenting controversial pieces. Moved by the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison, Botero got to work on what would eventually be a collection of about 80 paintings and drawings depicting the torture.
“The more I read, the more I was upset. I was surprised that America, which criticizes everyone for human rights, was doing this. This is so un-American. I felt I had to do it.”
The paintings will be on display in New York and he has no plans to sell them. Instead, he hopes to keep them up in a museum in America or Europe. He even made mention that one day, perhaps they can be displayed in Baghdad.
We’re glad Botero brought this controversy back to the media’s eye. We tend to forget important events like this and easily brush off the cruelty and abuse that took place.
More pictures of Botero’s brilliant Abu Ghraib work after the jump.
