enrique+iglesiasEnrique Iglesias was once Universal Music’s golden child…but now he’s suing them.

The artist sued the company claiming he was shortchanged by millions of dollars on the rights to the digital distribution of his works.

According to a new lawsuit filed in a Miami federal court, Enrique alleges that he only received what is described as a “small fraction” of his 50% royalty rate for streaming from Universal Music Group (UMG), resulting in multimillion dollar losses, Billboard reports.

Universal has wrongly insisted that artists like Iglesias be paid for music streaming in the same way they’re compensated for physical records even though none of the production, distribution or inventory costs exist in the digital world, Iglesias’s lawyer said in a statement.

Iglesias sued the music producer in Miami federal court Wednesday.
