Bella Takes Top Honors
The film Bella, by Mexican director Alejandro Gomez Monteverde and starring Eduardo Versategui, won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival. According to ABC News Online:
It has won the People’s Choice Award, which is often an indicator of future Academy Award nominations.Past recipients of the top prize at Toronto include Oscar Best Picture winners American Beauty, Life is Beautiful and Chariots of Fire. The American-produced Bella has edged out Patrice Leconte’s Mon meilleur ami and the politically charged Dixie Chicks: Shut up and Sing for the award.
So now Latinos are kicking butt in Canada as well. Critics have been praising this film since it first was shown to audiences and I guess the proof is in the pudding in this case. Congratulations to the cast and crew of this film!

Dark horse candidate for best picture goes to Bella (2006). It just won the People’s Choice Award in Toronto. I was able to see a screening and it is absolutely amazing. Best movie I’ve seen in years. To think a first time director was able to pull this off blows me away.

My girlfriends went to Toronto for the festival and came back saying nothing but great things about Bella. They all agreed that it was about time that movie fans across the country were treated to a love story like that of Bella. I’m so jealous they saw it and hope it’s released soon!
