Amaury Nolasco Insults Puerto Ricans in Work It
Amaury Nolasco has got a new show and it’s already giving viewers plenty to talk about…but not all is positive.
The actor stars in the ABC sitcom Work it and some Latino fans, especially from Puerto Rico, are not too happy with one of the lines his character said.
As you can see in the video, he says:
“I’m Puerto Rican, I’ll be great at selling drugs.”
Obviously a very stereotypical and unfair statement – but in Amaury’s defense, it’s not his words. It’s the writers.

He is playing a character and making a living as an actor. It is Unfortunate the stereotype of PuertoRicans Americans and all Latinos, as drug dealers, custodians and Backward wetbacks. The poor and uneducated, will sell drugs in any country including ours! We the U.S. have one of the highest rates of drug abuse of any civilized country, therefore a high number of drug dealers. Stop perpetuating Negative bias!

It is just a caracter, if would say dominican, columbian, venezuelan, mexican or any other place it would not make a difference, puertorricans can’t take if personal, he has to say what’s on the script and he can’t be changing it because he’s from Puerto Rico, Jesus Crist. Keep on working Amaury and hope you have lots of luck.

I’am french, my English is bad, so I write in French (sorry) Alors j’ai bien compris l’article et j’ai vu la vidéo..

I find it interesting that when Sophia Vergara made a stereotypical comment on Modern Family last year everyone was up in arms and started calling her names; saying she should be ashamed. It was the writers in that case as well. Sounds like a double standard to me.

when an actor/actress gets a script, they have to memorize it, before they play the part. They also have the opportunity to tell the writers about something offensive, that should be change. I am a boricua never done drugs, never sold drugs, I ‘ll be darned if am going to let some one call me a drug dealer because they think is a joke. I worked hard all my life, took a lot of bull from supervisors just to feed my family, but I never let no-one call me something an not. Individuals like that never get anywhere worth anything in life.

This is unacceptable. I can’t believe any of us are condoning what has just been reported here.
It may be a joke to you, because you know this not to be entirely true, but to those whom we have to supervise, work with, work for, etc., it is far from a joke.
What this does, to the minds of those who are not like us and have little or no exposure to us outside of the local news, and in this case, a television program aimed at family during “the family hour”, is to reaffirm a pressuposition already planted in and nutured at the dinner table, at family reunions, at parties, etc. And with that, carries a greater challenge for those of us who not only have no connection to the experience implied by the “joke”, but have to continue to interact with those who already condemn us before getting to know us at any level.
P.S. You may all be interested to know that another e-publication (one targeted at affluent NYers) have already labelled this program “the worst TV show in TV history” for other reasons…
